ABSTRACT

In a free electron laser a relativistic electron beam is passed through a periodic static field, and amplification is achieved via stimulated emission in the direction of the electron beam. The wavelength of the emitted radiation is related to the periodicity of the static field and can be tuned continuously over a broad region by changing the energy of the incident electron beam. Laser oscillations at 3.4 microns in such a device has recently been reported by the Stanford group[1]. More... »
