ABSTRACT

Social psychologists have a long history of interest in understanding the factors that group members consider when evaluating the leaders of organized groups (Cartwright & Zander, 1953; Gibb, 1954, 1969). This concern has been motivated by an intrinsic interest in the basis of people’s satisfaction in group settings and by an instrumental concern with the effective functioning of groups. The latter concern has motivated the study of leadership evaluation because of the belief that the endorsement of group leaders by group members enhances their ability to lead effectively by conferring legitimacy on them (French & Raven, 1959).1 More... »
