ABSTRACT

The phenomena of plant disease offer challenges both to biologists and to agriculturalists, and have consequently been studied intensively for many years. Despite this attention, many aspects of the physiology of host-pathogen interaction remain obscure. One of the principal goals of plant pathology is to provide the basic information needed for the design of crop protection strategies, a major component of which is the breeding of disease-resistant varieties. The technology of genetic manipulation of plants is advancing rapidly (1) so that there is a danger that procedures for incorporation of genes for disease resistance into crop plants will be available before we are in a position to predict which genes might profitably be transferred.
