ABSTRACT

Over the last few years, considerable progress has been made in the development and understanding of optical bistable devices. A number of nonlinear systems have been shown to exhibit bistability, ranging from atomic vapors to semi-conductors. Switching times down to fractions of nanoseconds have been reached. The contributions presented at this meeting show that optical bistability is on the way to becoming applicable in data processing. Although the major thrust of research is now aimed towards this goal, optical bistability still remains a subject of fundamental interest. Of particular importance are the search for new nonlinearities and a better understanding of the dynamics of nonlinear interferometers. More... »
