ABSTRACT

The principal aim of this paper is to emphasize that macrophages of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) play an important role in the mechanism of natural defense against aggression by bacterial, neoplastic or even normal cells. It has been observed that the phagocytic activity of the RES as measured by the rate of clearance of colloidal carbon from the blood (1,2) and expressed by the phagocytic index K is increased in all these conditions.
