ABSTRACT

With the development of receptor-specific ligands, radiolabelled to high specific activity, it has become feasible to study directly the binding of drugs to their receptors. This approach can be used to measure the detailed binding properties of receptors in whole tissue as well as in membrane preparations. In particular it is possible to determine both the number and the localisation of receptor binding sites in the nervous system. These results complement information regarding the distribution of receptors as assessed by electrophysiological and other histochemical techniques. The muscarinic acetylcholine receptor is one example in which biochemical and histochemical approaches are being used to further characterise a neurotransmitter receptor system. More... »
