ABSTRACT

Out of this personal, historic description some key principles and dimensions will be drawn which affect the purpose and functions of therapeutic communities and institutions when considered as part of and interacting with the wider society. I will also try to distinguish such principles and dimensions from those which govern a community or institution endeavouring to operate as a relatively ‘closed system’, i.e. one regarded “as sufficiently independent to allow most of its problems to be analysed with reference to its internal structure and without reference to its external environment.”1 In effect, I am distinguishing the more limited therapeutic community based on established firm boundaries between it and its environments from one conceived and developed as an open-system.
