ABSTRACT

Experimentally determined particle growth kinetics are presented for two types of systems: a dispersion of platinum particles in a microporous alumina support, which is typical of commercial catalysts, and a dispersion of platinum particles on a flat, nonporous alumina substrate, which is more amenable to interpretation by means of theoretical models. Comparison of the experimental results with estimates derived from a number of models for particle growth indicates that, under oxidizing conditions, growth is most likely controlled by facet-inhibited interparticle transport over the substrate surface. Although detailed agreement of the theory with experiments on microporous catalysts is not obtained, qualitative theoretical trends are generally substantiated by experiment. More... »
