ABSTRACT

Surgery is extensively used in the treatment of vascular disease as a procedure for restoring blood flow to ischemic areas. An example of this is coronary bypass surgery which has become widely used as a treatment for heart disease, with the surgical implantation of multiple bypasses being quite common. In this procedure native vessels, either the mammary artery or the saphenous vein, are generally employed as the vascular graft, i.e. the substitute blood vessel. The use of artificial blood vessels made of synthetic biomaterials also has been investigated. More... »
