ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a general approach and method for the conduct of interviews with the anxiety-disordered patient. The chapter does not present a structured approach to the derivation of differential diagnoses according to decision rules in any single diagnostic system. Rather, it presents a more general approach to the gathering of data in the interview, which results in a useful understanding of the patient’s fears. The general approach we propose is based on the scientific method (hypothesis testing) in which the interviewer constructs a theory of the patient’s fear, derives hypotheses from the theory, and subjects these to empirical validation in the interview.
