ABSTRACT

Several groups have started to characterize cDNAs coding for allergens to obtain information regarding the nature of allergenic proteins as well as to use recombinant allergens as tools to study their interaction with the immune system (1). It is now that an increasing number of recombinant allergens has become available and unexpectedly it has turned out, that due to structural and immunological similarities among them, it may be possible to define a limited number of model allergens (epitopes) for diagnosis and perhaps specific therapy of Type I allergic diseases (1–3). Before certain recombinant allergens can be used for diagnosis and therapy they need to be extensively characterized in vitro and in vivo. In the present chapter the development of recombinant tree (4) and grass pollen allergens (5) and their way to diagnosis and therapy of Type I allergy is summarized. More... »

40 schema:description Several groups have started to characterize cDNAs coding for allergens to obtain information regarding the nature of allergenic proteins as well as to use recombinant allergens as tools to study their interaction with the immune system (1). It is now that an increasing number of recombinant allergens has become available and unexpectedly it has turned out, that due to structural and immunological similarities among them, it may be possible to define a limited number of model allergens (epitopes) for diagnosis and perhaps specific therapy of Type I allergic diseases (1–3). Before certain recombinant allergens can be used for diagnosis and therapy they need to be extensively characterized in vitro and in vivo. In the present chapter the development of recombinant tree (4) and grass pollen allergens (5) and their way to diagnosis and therapy of Type I allergy is summarized.
