ABSTRACT

A chemical vapor deposited, silicon alloyed, isotropic pyrolytic carbon (PyC) has been widely regarded as the primary candidate for the structural material for components of mechanical heart valve prostheses. The biocompatibility of PyC, in particular its thromboresistance, together with its resistance to degradation in the biological environment, has made it the material of choice[l]. The design of the valve and the choice of material must provide for survival for lifetimes of the order of 109 cycles. More... »
