ABSTRACT

Assemblages of immobilised microbial cells embedded in ambient extracellular polymers termed biofilms are well established on water- and air-exposed solid surfaces [1,2]. Subaqueous biofilms consist of microbial cells and often more than 99% water stabilised and immobilised by a matrix of large amounts of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) formed by the cells. Subaerial biofilms on exposed rocks in contrast can be regarded as accumulations of cell material and EPS maintaining life at the presence of a minimum of water often amounting to less than 1% of the total cell mass [2].
