ABSTRACT

Cyanobacteria are unique among photosynthetic prokaryotes in three different aspects. 1) they contain two photosystems, 2) their photosystem II is able to use water as the electron donor and to evolve oxygen, and 3) they carry a complete respiratory chain not only on the cytoplasmic membrane but also on the intracytoplasmic (thylakoid) membrane. A recent review by Schmetterer [1] describes the multitude of electron carriers present in the cytoplasmic and the thylakoid membranes of cyanobacteria. While the components of the photosynthetic electron transport chain which resides solely on the thylakoid membrane have been intensively studied, the organization of the respiratory chain has been less well characterized. By immunoblot studies it has been shown, that the respiratory chain in cyanobacteria contains a complex I-homologous NAD(P)H-dehydrogenase [2], a cytochrome b6 /f complex [3] and a cytochrome c-oxidase [4].
