ABSTRACT

In this contribution on the interaction of microorganisms with their substrates special attention is given to the development of microbial biofilms at and below the surface of monuments and objects of art. These biofilms can be very detrimental and thus quickly destroy the substrate. However, under certain conditions, the microflora contributes to the formation of a stabilised skin or layer. Slow growing poikilotrophic microorganisms are important factors in this process. This layer, which is often pigmented differently than the substrate, is called patina. Patina is regarded as the sum of all surface changes of an object of art. The interactions of the biofilms with the substrates are considered under physical, chemical and aesthetic aspects. Physical or mechanical attacks and alterations are often more important than chemical ones. Patina or biopatina by itself represents a considerable change of the original substrate. However, it may also be regarded as an hiatus period for the monument or object in question. The physical-chemical changes leading to a patina and sometimes to a subsequent breakdown of the upper layers of the material may sometimes reach almost geological time-scales. More... »
