ABSTRACT

The ability to introduce genes asexually into somatic cells is one of the most powerful tools available for molecular genetic studies. Gene transfer has been used to evaluate biological consequences of defined mutations in regulatory regions, to determine the intracellular fate of gene products and to perturb the host’s genetic interactions. When transformed animal cells are incorporated in the germline, the role of the introduced gene in live animals can be evaluated (1–7).
