ABSTRACT

The colorful pigmentation of plant tissues like flowers, fruits or seeds is due to the synthesis of anthocyanins, a subclass of flavonoids. The genetical and molecular analysis of anthocyanin biosynthesis in a number of plants, predominantly in Zea mays (maize) and Antirrhinum majus, showed that anthocyanins are sequentially synthesized from small precursor molecules. The synthesis of anthocyanins occurs in a well organized coordinated fashion. In maize, about a dozen regulatory and structural genes interact, which finally results in tissue-specific synthesis of pigments. Recently several anthocyanin genes of maize have been cloned and are under molecular investigation. More... »
