ABSTRACT

Chloroplast biogenesis consists of a complex series of events which finally leads to the assembly of a functional photosynthetic apparatus. Since genes encoding plastidial proteins are scattered between nuclear and plastid genomes, intergenomic cooperation is an inherent feature of this developmental process. However, neither the signals mediating the exchange of information between the plastid and the nucleo-cytosolic compartments nor master regulatory genes controlling the development of chloroplasts have been identified (Taylor, 1989).
