ABSTRACT

Single chain ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) are denominated Type 1 RIPs as opposed to RIPs consisting of two nonidentical subunits (A and B chains) that are joined by a disulfide bond (Stirpe and Barbieri, 1986; Stirpe et al., 1992). Complete amino acid sequences are now known for many Type 1 and Type 2 RIPs. Several type 1 RIPs were isolated from Saponaria officinalis(Stirpe et al., 1983). Among these, saporin-6 (also called SO-6) has amino acid sequence similarity with the RIPs from Phytolacca americana and Phytolacca dodecandra (Lappi et al., 1985; Rung et al., 1990), and with dianthin-30, from Dianthus caryophyllus, which belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family like Saponaria officinalis (Legname et al., 1991).
