ABSTRACT

Systemic sepsis occurs in about 30% of cases of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) despite antibiotic prophylaxis. It is usually due to the release of endotoxin, or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), from the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria. The core region of LPS is relatively constant in structure between bacterial species and patients with high levels of antibodies to this region would therefore be expected to be more resistant to developing post-op sepsis.
