ABSTRACTThe gut-associated1 and bronchial-associated lymphoid tissues2 are well recognized as part of the mucosal associated lymphoid tissue in which IgA isotype of B cells circulate and home to a variety of glandular tissues.3-7 However, genital-associated lymphoid tissue has received limited attention. Cervico-vaginal immunization with inactivated poliovirus in human subjects resulted in anti-polio IgA antibodies in the vaginal washings;8 intramuscular immunization did not induce vaginal IgA antibodies. Adoptive transfer experiments with radiolabeled lymphocytes suggests that the origin of IgA-producing B cells in murine genital tissue appears to be the mesenteric lymph nodes.6 Direct administration of SRBC into Peyer’s patches of Sprague-Dowley rats induced vaginal IgA and IgG antibodies;9,10 this suggested that homing of sensitized B cells has taken place from GALT to the genital tract. Intra-uterine immunization elicited vaginal IgA, as well as serum IgG antibodies. In another series of experiments, vaginal application of horse ferritin to mice induced specific vaginal IgA antibodies.11 They suggested that the paucity of T and B cells and lymphoid follicles in the cervico-vaginal mucosa and stimulation of vaginal IgA antibodies by immunization of the pelvic lymph nodes, argues in favour of the iliac lymph nodes being involved in generating IgA antibodies in the genital tract.12,13 More... »
