ABSTRACT

In 1991 the University Hospital of Geneva was considering implementing a smoke-free hospital policy. As resistances were raised we decided to conduct an anonymous survey among hospital employees. The goal of this survey was to measure the prevalence of smoking habits and gather opinions about smoking regulation in a representative sample of the 5 100 employees of the hospital. A representative sample of 348 persons received a questionnaire. The response rate was 92%. Results are the following: smoking prevalence was 25% among health professionals and 32% in the administrative and technical staff. Opinions about smoking regulation showed that 75% of the employees were in favor of stricter limitations of smoking and 22% thought tobacco should be banned in the hospital. 94% of the smokers thought tobacco should be limited.
