ABSTRACT

The physics of laser-electron interactions changes dramatically at relativistic intensities, where the transverse momentum of the charge in the laser wave, as measured in electron units, exceeds unity. Three fundamental vacuum processes are know to occur in this regime: relativistic ponderomotive scattering,1 ultrahigh intensity Compton backscattering,2,3 and nonlinear Kapitza-Dirac scattering.4,5
