ABSTRACT

The effect of surface enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) was studied for molecules adsorbed on non-metallic surfaces, namely graphene and graphene oxide, deposited on rough gold support. Comparative analysis of the effect was presented for thymine, one of the bases of DNA. The maximum enhancement factor for Thy adsorbed on graphene was equal to 3.7 for ring and N–H deformational vibrations and it was about 4 for N–H deformational vibrations for graphene oxide-based system. However, the majority of vibration bands of Thy adsorbed on graphene oxide in the 1,800–500 cm−1 region showed greater enhancement factors than those on graphene. Total enhancement in this region was about 2.0 for graphene oxide and 1.6 for graphene. The mechanism of the enhancement for graphene-based system seems to have rather chemical than electromagnetic nature. Comparison of the obtained data allowed us to conclude that the mechanism of IR enhancement for Thy adsorbed on graphene-based structures (graphene and graphene oxide) has charge transfer nature in contrast to predominately local field enhancement in the case of Thy adsorbed on single-wall carbon nanotubes characterized by higher enhancement factors (up to 5.3 for N–H deformational vibrations and about 2.8 for the total spectrum). 21 schema:description The effect of surface enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) was studied for molecules adsorbed on non-metallic surfaces, namely graphene and graphene oxide, deposited on rough gold support.
