ABSTRACT

Despite heterogeneity of stroke mechanisms, one challenge remains across all reperfusion therapies—the persistence of a proximal arterial occlusion. Thrombus burden in stroke patients is often disproportionately larger than allowed doses of systemic thrombolytic, and many patients do not recover during or shortly after treatment. Moreover, a substantial proportion of patients arrive beyond currently established time frame for systemic thrombolytic, thus necessitating our search for effective and direct ways of dissolving or removing the thrombus from cerebral vessels.
