ABSTRACT

In the course of analyzing the ultrastructure of Nicotiana pollen we have observed numerous crystalline-fibrillar bodies in the vegetative cytoplasm of mature and activated grains. Further studies during development revealed that these bodies change dramatically and eventually disappear, suggesting that they might be precursors for cytoskeletal components, e.g., microfilaments (MF) or microtubules (MT), that are elaborated during germination and participate in the growth process. Although fibrillar crystalloids have been reported in previous studies on the pollen (Franke et al., 1972; Hoefert, 1969), their developmental transformations have received little attention. The enclosed report, thus, provides a brief, preliminary description of these structures and their changes during pollen tube germination. We also provide preliminary results about the macromolecular composition of pollen grains as obtained by gel electrophoresis. More... »
