ABSTRACT

Immunoglobulins, like other secreted glycoproteins, are synthesised on membrane-bound polyribosomes, released into the cysternae of the endoplasmic reticulum and pass to the outside via the Golgi apparatus. During passage through the cell there is a stepwise addition of carbohydrate at different subcellular sites, and a general rule is that mannose and hexosamine are added early, whereas fucose and galactose are added late (1,2).
