ABSTRACT

Although experimental techniques of atomic physics, and especially high resolution spectroscopic methods, have already been successfully used for a long time to get precise measurements of nuclear properties, it has appeared with the recent advent of laser spectroscopy, that these new techniques would still allow more sensitive experiments. In particular, use of an atomic beam and a tunable single mode CW dye laser, make it easy to get rid of Doppler broadening, and it seemed interesting to apply such laser methods to investigate the spectroscopic properties of unstable and rare atoms, and to study their variation along a series of isotopes. It is to be emphasized that for light nuclei such as sodium, several theoretical calculation results are available (see fig. 1), among which ab initio Hartree-Fock calculation play an important role in that sense that they predict a region of strong deformation at a neutron number of 20 (corresponding in the case of Na to a mass number of 31) [1] ; this feature has been clearly put in evidence experimentally by measuring the Na isotopes masses accurately [2], but any other confirmation appearing either with isotope shifts or with quadrupole moment measurements would give strong confidence in that sort of theoretical calculation method.
