ABSTRACT

Although it is well-known that calcium is required for contraction in vascular smooth muscle, little is known about the mechanisms which regulate its free cytoplasmic concentration. There are a number of areas within the cell which may participate in this process but a unified hypothesis has yet to be proposed regarding selective roles of these various specific membrane areas. While studies with intact tissue have clearly identified compartmentation of Ca++ levels in vascular smooth muscle, successful identification of any compartment with a specific organelle, remains to be accomplished (1).
