ABSTRACT

The prelaunch version of the Nimbus-7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (Nimbus-7/SMMR) sea ice algorithm was utilized to prepare global maps of the sea ice coverage for a test period coincident with the NASA CV-990 airborne laboratory underflights in October-November 1978. Selected areas from the north polar map projections of the sea ice parameters were compared with data obtained concurrently with the Nimbus-7/SMMR simulator and other instruments on board the NASA CV-990, and were found to be in disagreement. This is attributed to offsets in the radiance values used as inputs, as has also been observed in retrieving ocean/atmosphere geophysical parameters from Nimbus-7/SMMR data. As of this writing, in-orbit calibration adjustments are in progress. Some displays of the adjusted radiances, using interim adjustment values, are discussed. Of particular interest is the observation of larger variation in the polarization differences for a given ice type than was anticipated. This will have to be taken into account in the ongoing fine-tuning of the sea ice algorithms. More... »
