ABSTRACT

Parsley cells (Petroselinum hortense Hoffm.) which have been kept in suspension culture in complete darkness for several years do not form chloroplasts in the light. The only known response of these cell cultures to irradiation with visible and long-wave UV light is the synthesis and rapid accumulation of large amounts of flavone and flavonol glycosides. These flavonoid glycosides are also abundant in intact parsley plants under normal growth conditions, but are not recognized by the human eye because of the intense colour of the chlorophyll of green tissue. Dark-grown cell cultures are almost colourless, and the accumulation of the greenish-yellow flavonoid glycosides after irradiation is therefore easily visible. More... »
