ABSTRACT

These lectures deal with the effects of the discrete lattice on modulated structures in solid state physics. The modulated structure could be a periodic lattice distortion, a sinusoidal or helical magnetic structure, staging of alkali metals in graphite intercalation compounds, polytypism in crystal formation, or some other periodic arrangement.
