ABSTRACTFIR emission from CH3 I molecules was observed at (16) first by Dyubko and coworkers as early as 1974, using a medium power cw CO2 laser. While the number of FIR laser lines emitted by this molecule following cw emission was extended in 1975 (17), irradiation by a chopped (10) laser with 200W peak by Chang and McGee (10) increased the number of FIR lines by a factor two. The apparatus of Dyubko et al (17) with cw CO2 laser irradiation was applied to the deuterated compound CD3I and the number of FIR lines emitted by this molecule was from the very beginning larger than in the normal compound. No further investigation of FIR emission by this molecule was performed, while it would be expected that more powerful chopped CO2 lasers would produce an increase in the number of FIR lines in C3D I.
