ABSTRACT

In 1959 Aharonov and Bohm1 proposed a two-slit diffraction experiment which implied that it was the vector potential, A, not the magnetic field, B, which was of fundamental importance in quantum mechanics. Their experiment showed that the interference pattern caused by an electron diffracting from the two slits depended upon the amount of magnetic flux enclosed by the two possible paths but not upon the strength of the magnetic field in the region of the electron.
