ABSTRACT

Cellular interaction, the sine qua non of the immune system, is based on ligand-receptor systems expressed on the surface of the interacting cell types. Our understanding of the cellular functioning of the immune system has been made possible largely through the use of antibodies to surface molecules which are selectively expressed on subpopulations of lymphocytes at different stages of their development. In many studies the emphasis has been on the association of cell function with the presence or absence of a particular surface marker1–3.
