ABSTRACT

There are few, if any, areas of human behavior in American culture that can generate as much concern, controversy, and confusion as that of sexual deviation. It should be emphasized here at the outset that the cultural context is an important factor in that many behaviors that are labeled deviant in the United States would not be so labeled if they occurred in other countries. What further adds to the confusion is that there is virtually no agreed upon criteria as to what constitutes deviant. For example, statistical definitions would simply look at the various frequencies of human sexual behaviors and then make mention of how far the behavior falls from the norm. Legal definitions, which tend to vary considerably from one state to the other, focus on the behavior if it falls outside the boundaries of the law, and the frequency of occurrence would have little relationship to this definition. Psychiatric definitions tend to be related to the theoretical perspectives of the individual defining deviant, and would have little apparent relationship to statistical or legal ones. There also tend to be social definitions of deviant behavior, and even within the same country (i.e., United States) there can be significant variability from one social milieu to the next as to what constitutes deviant sexual behavior. In this chapter, we will not try to define the term deviant, as it is assumed that the vast majority of readers would agree that the behavior of the rapist and attempted murderer we have chosen as a treatment example would be considered as deviant. For purposes of clarifying the reasons for various treatment decisions discussed later, some attention should be given to how we tend to conceptualize and categorize sexual behaviors commonly referred to as deviant.
