ABSTRACT

Recent studies on post-mortem and brain biopsies have provided good evidence for a central cholinergic deficit in presenile and senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (AD/SDAT).(Bowen et al. 1976; Davies 1979).More recent results suggest that the deficit in the central nervous system is not limited to cholinergic neurons. Indeed Somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SLI) and presynaptic markers of Nor-adrenergic and serotoninergic systems have also been reported to be reduced in post-mortem cerebral cortex from cases of AD/SDAT (Bowen et al.1983; Yates et al. 1983; Aral et al.1984). In contrast, no consistent involvement of Dopaminergic, Gabaergic, Substance P, Vasointestinal peptide (VIP), Thyrotropin-Releasing-Hormone (TRH) and Cholecystokinin (CCK) systems have been found in AD/SDAT (See rev. by Rossor and Emson 1982) More... »
