ABSTRACT

Many factors need to be considered when deciding on the optimal therapeutic modality for a child with end stage renal disease (ESRD). Although chronic intermittent peritoneal dialysis has been used for more than a decade for children in the United States while they await renal transplantation, until recently, most children with ESRD were placed on chronic hemodialysis. With the recent availability of small, flexible dialysate containers and modification of the continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) technique, this treatment has become increasingly popular as a dialytic treatment for the pediatric population.
