ABSTRACT

The adherence of bacteria to biologically inert surfaces may result in a tenacious and irreversible binding (14). In some systems, this irreversible binding involves the production of bacterial exopolysaccharides which are known also as glycocalyx, or slime. Since the glycocalyx condenses radically during dehydration in preparation for transmission electron microscopy, it has been an elusive structure to demonstrate on bacteria. However, specific antibodies were used by Bayer and Thurow (1) and Mackie et al. (10) to prevent the dehydration collapse of the glycocalyx.
