ABSTRACT

Nitrogen-fixing nodules on leguminous plants are formed as a result of interaction between legume roots and symbiotic bacteria. These soil bacteria are collectively referred to as rhizobia and belong to the genera Rhizobium, Bradyrhizobium, and Azorhizobium. The symbiosis is specific and each strain has a characteristic host range, but the degree of specificity varies greatly among rhizobia.1 Some isolates have a narrow host range. For example, Rhizobium meliloti only nodulates species of the genera Medicago, Melilotus, and Trigonella. Within the species Rhizobium leguminosarum, biovar trifolii nodulates Trifolium sp., whereas biovar viciae nodulates a variety of species from the genera Vicia, Pisum, Lens, and Lathyrus. In contrast, some isolates exhibit a very broad host range. For example, some tropical Bradyrhizobium strains nodulate legumes of different tribes and subfamilies. Rhizobium sp. NGR234 has the broadest host range of any rhizobium studied and is known to nodulate more than 70 genera of legumes (W. J. Broughton, pers. comm.) including many of the most important legumes in world trade, such as longbeans (Vigna unguiculata), peanuts (Arachis hypogaea), soybeans (Glycine max), and winged beans (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus). 77 schema:description Nitrogen-fixing nodules on leguminous plants are formed as a result of interaction between legume roots and symbiotic bacteria. These soil bacteria are collectively referred to as rhizobia and belong to the genera Rhizobium, Bradyrhizobium, and Azorhizobium. The symbiosis is specific and each strain has a characteristic host range, but the degree of specificity varies greatly among rhizobia.1 Some isolates have a narrow host range. For example, Rhizobium meliloti only nodulates species of the genera Medicago, Melilotus, and Trigonella. Within the species Rhizobium leguminosarum, biovar trifolii nodulates Trifolium sp., whereas biovar viciae nodulates a variety of species from the genera Vicia, Pisum, Lens, and Lathyrus. In contrast, some isolates exhibit a very broad host range. For example, some tropical Bradyrhizobium strains nodulate legumes of different tribes and subfamilies. Rhizobium sp. NGR234 has the broadest host range of any rhizobium studied and is known to nodulate more than 70 genera of legumes (W. J. Broughton, pers. comm.) including many of the most important legumes in world trade, such as longbeans (Vigna unguiculata), peanuts (Arachis hypogaea), soybeans (Glycine max), and winged beans (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus). It also nodulates the nonlegume Parasponia andersonii.
