ABSTRACT

We analyze the competition between counter-propagating waves in a bidirectional ring laser, under the approximation of a population decay rate (γ‖ small compared with the relaxation rates of the polarization (γ⊥) and electric field (k). Accordingly, the atomic polarization can be adiabatically eliminated and the only variable explicitely depending on space turns out to be the population, △(x), which is expanded in Fourier modes. The resulting infinite cascade of equations is usually truncated after the first harmonic [1], assuming that the contributions of higher order modes are negligible. More... »
