ABSTRACT

Recent neuropathological studies have indicated that the degenerative process in patients with early Huntington’s disease is restricted to a subpopulation of caudate neurons projecting to the internal pallidal segments (Albin et al., 1990). In more advanced cases of Huntington’s disease degenerative changes are found in other parts of the basal ganglia as well as in cortical and thalamic areas (for review Richardson, 1990). The question what causes the progression of the neuropathology has not yet been answered. Does the hitherto unknown pathogenetic mechanism affect these extrastriatal areas at a later timepoint or do transneuronal degenerative processes play a role here? More... »
