ABSTRACTThe interest of electron transport in mesoscopic systems is well known both for electronic applications and for investigations of basic quantum physics1. The use of the Wigner function has been found particularly appropriate for the theoretical analysis of such a problem2 since it combines the rigorous approach of quantum mechanics with the more familiar representation of the phase space. However, while ballistic coherent transport has been deeply investigated in the recent literature, dissipative scattering by phonons has been included in the theory only by means of the relaxation-time approximation3, heavily deteriorating the quality of the rigorous quantum approach.
