ABSTRACT

The past few years have witnessed a dramatic increase in our understanding of how normal cells become malignant. Such efforts have been aided immeasurably by investigations of oncogenic retroviruses (oncoviruses). These studies have revealed the intimate associations that exist between retroviruses and their host cells. This review focuses on the structure and function of retrovirus genomes with emphasis on how their organization enables retroviruses to persist in vertebrate cell genomes, induce malignant transformation, and influence host-cell gene structure and expression.
