ABSTRACT

In autoimmune diseases there is a functional lack of tolerance and an “autoantigen” is recognized by the immune system leading to the development of pathological conditions. A broad spectrum of diseases are included in this definition, and they are often subdivided into non-organ specific diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and organ specific diseases, such as Graves’ and Hashimoto’s diseases (reviewed 1). In all these diseases autoantibodies, mainly IgG, are detected, to different “autoantigens”. In a few circumstances the nature of these autoantigens has been defined. Often these are cell surface receptors for hormones, such as TSH in Graves’ disease (2) or for neurotransmitters, as in myasthenia gravis (3). More... »
