ABSTRACT

This review paper summarizes important results obtained by the author and co-workers on the hydrodynamic behavior of cohesive sediments in a flow field. Experimental laws have been obtained for the initiation, degree and rates of erosion, deposition and resuspension in terms of readily determinable gross flow variables while the controlling gross soil properties can be represented in terms of a few parameters which can be easily evaluated. These parameters are expected to vary in natural estuaries as the sediment disperses during the deposition-resuspension cycles. It was shown that erosion and deposition does not take place simultaneously and that a given flow can maintain in suspension a specific portion of the total sediment. A model has been developed which explains the observed phenomena and links the behavior of cohesive sediments to that of cohesionless sediments and wash load. The knowledge to-date provides a basic and unified framework within which detailed aspects can be identified for further studies. More... »
