ABSTRACT

In 1979, Rémy etal. detected in two cells of the suboesophageal ganglion (SOG) of an insect, the migratory locust, a substance immunologically related to arginine vasopressin (AVP), the antidiuretic hormone of mammals. This substance was named “AVP-like hormone.” It is transported in fibers and arborizations of two SOG cells throughout the whole central nervous system (Rémy and Girardie, 1980). These results, obtained with an immuno-histological method, were confirmed with radioimmunoassay (RIA) by Proux and Rougon-Rapuzzi in 1980. These authors established also that the AVP-like hormone was released into the hemolymph and transported to the insect diuretic organ, the Malpighian tubules (MT). It plays a diuretic role by increasing the excretion of primary urine (Proux etal., 1981). More... »
