ABSTRACT

In recent years many investigations have shown that genes imparting resistance to many biotic and abiotic stresses such as pathotoxin, salinity, low temperature and herbicide are expressed in the pollen grain also (Mulcahy, 1979; Mascarenhas, 1989). This has opened up new avenues for application of section pressure on pollen grains to achieve preferential transmission of adaptive genes to the progeny (Ottaviano and Mulchay, 1989). In some systems, selection pressure on pollen in the form of ageing (Milcahy et al., 1982; Pallais et al., 1986) or high density pollinations (Mulcahy et. al., 1975, Lee and Hartgerink, 1986; Schlichting et. al., 1987) has been shown to increase the vigour and uniformity of the progeny. We have been investigating the feasibility of using high temperature and high humidity treatment to pollen as selection pressures to increase the vigour of the progeny. Our earlier studies have shown that in many systems, high temperature and/or RH significantly affects pollen vigour but not viability (Shivanna and Cresti 1989, Shivanna et al., 1991 a,b). More... »
