ABSTRACT

Data from our laboratory have shown that healthy women in early postmenopause vary widely in how efficiently they absorb calcium (1). Absorption efficiency in these studies was determined by use of a double isotope method (2, 3) under metabolic balance conditions, with mixed diets that replicated the subjects’ usual intakes of calcium, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Even after adjusting the results to a uniform calcium intake of 20 mmol/d, only 24% of the values for absorption efficiency were at or above 0.32, the level needed to ensure net absorption of a quantity of calcium sufficient to offset typical obligatory loss.
