ABSTRACT

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology of the breast is a historically validated procedure, although its usefulness compared with that of other minimally invasive methods of tissue procurement is controversial. Core needle biopsy (CNB), performed with a variety of devices, has gained popularity for evaluating nonpalpable breast lesions. CNB devices are also being considered for evaluating palpable breast lesions in conjunction with or as a replacement for FNA. A review of the literature with emphasis on comparing FNA with CNB for the diagnosis of nonpalpable and palpable breast abnormalities is presented herein. More... »
